| Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to
2000, Barrington’s population grew by 21.3 percent, adding
1,311 residents for a total of 7,475. The median age is
36.6, with 27.5 percent of the population under the age of
18 and 7.0 percent age 65 and older. The total number of
households is 2,756, with an average size of 2.7 persons. Of
those, 2,076 are family households, with an average size of
3.1 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 3,147 total
housing units. |

per square mile of land area. Barrington contains 46.7
square miles of land area and 1.9 square miles of inland
water area. |

| Origin: Barrington bears the family name
of the English governor of Massachusetts and New Hampshire,
Samuel Shute of Barrington Hall, whose brother was Viscount
Barrington. It was once the third most populous town in the
state. The smelting of iron ore was at the time the area's
primary industry. |
