Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, Somersworth’s population grew by 2.0 percent, adding 228 residents for a total of 11,477. The median age is 34.9, with 26.3 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 12.0 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 4,687, with an average size of 2.4 persons. Of those, 3,079 are family households, with an average size of 3.0 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 4,841 total housing units.
 
Population density, 2002: 1,181.0 persons per square mile of land area, the 5th highest among the cities and towns. Somersworth contains 9.8 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
 
Origin: Somersworth began as a parish of Dover, named Sligo after the Irish county which was home to an early colonial governor. Later, it was called Summersworth, which was contracted to Somersworth when it was incorporated in 1754. It was incorporated as a city in 1893. Situated on the Salmon River, Somersworth has been home to many gristmills, sawmills, and cotton and woolen making establishments.
